9 Tips for Staying Safe in the Sun
Summer is here! Its so refreshing to be in the sun and to spend time outdoors, but this hot sun can be harmful if you're not careful! Read these 9 tips from Jwala Karnik, chief medical office at Suneva Medical, inc. on how to keep yourself safe this summer!
Keep an eye on the clock. The sun is strongest between 10 A.M. and 4 P.M., so when you're at the beach during these hours, it's best to avoid direct exposure to the sun as much as possible: Time to break out the beach umbrella.
Wear chic shades. If you're planning to be outdoors during peak hours, wear a wide-brim hat and sunglasses.
Moisturize with SPF. Make sure your daily moisturizer has SPF. This will not only protect your skin from harmful UV rays, but will also prevent sun spots and early signs of aging.
Lather it on early. Don't wait until you're in the sun to apply protection: Your skin needs 20 minutes to absorb sunscreen completely.
Apply often. Be sure to re-apply your sunscreen every few hours, or more frequently if you go in the water. Just because it's waterproof doesn't mean you shouldn't re-apply.
Double down. You should apply a second coat of sunscreen on your nose, hands, ears, and the tops of your feet because they burn more easily.
Pucker up. Your lips need love too! Use a lip balm with at least SPF 15 to protect them from the sun and lock in moisture.
Don't forget your décolletage. Remember to apply protection to your neck and upper chest areas even when you're not at the beach. Sun damage on this part of the body is a telltale sign of aging.
Moisturize day and night. While moisturizing with SPF during the day protects your skin from the sun, it is also important to lotion up in the evening. This will replenish and nourish your skin and help you achieve a healthier, younger-looking complexion.
