Exciting New Technology for Women's Postpartum Health Concerns

Did you recently give birth? While it is exciting, we know that sometimes it can leave you with some unpleasant health concerns. To help diagnose and treat these postpartum conditions, we are excited to announce a new service offering for our female patients called Rehabilitative Ultrasonic Imaging, or RUSI.

This exciting new technology uses ultrasound waves to produce its images, making it safe for use on anyone since it is free from radiation. The insight gained from the imaging helps physical therapists diagnose and treat women’s health concerns caused by pregnancy, postpartum, or aging.

Women’s Postpartum Health Concerns

In addition to safely diagnosing problem areas, the full functional picture of the patient’s body that these images provide allows the physical therapist to create a detailed and customized treatment plan for each patient.

RUSI findings are also used to provide patient education, as they can monitor their muscles on the screen while receiving instruction from the physical therapist for how to improve coordination.

RUSI can identify and treat a variety of common postpartum concerns that women may experience include:

  • Diastasis Rectus Abdominis (DRA) – During RUSI, the split along the abdomen that exists after childbirth is viewed and measured, while exercise performed during imaging can increase stability and neuromuscular control of the abdominal wall.

  • Pelvic Floor Muscle Dysfunction – RUSI can see poor muscle control and coordination in the pelvic floor, leading to pain and weakness.

  • Incontinence – the RUSI technology can measure bladder volume and position, post-void residual urine in the bladder, and pelvic floor muscle function.

  • Chronic Constipation / Difficulty with Defecation – Muscle dysfunction around the rectum, rectocele, and stool volume in the rectum can also be seen with RUSI. Combining this information with real-time biofeedback can be used to improve overall bowel function.

  • Low Back Pain – Lower back muscles that help stabilize the spine and activate the abdominal core are measured with RUSI. In treatment, coordination of these muscle groups can ease back pain and reduce the chances of recurrence.

  • Pediatric Pelvic Floor Problems – If your child is having trouble passing their stools or emptying their bladder, RUSI enables physical therapists to view pelvic floor muscles and their activity (or inactivity.)
